Richardson DeMolays traveled back to Texas Motor Speedway, on the morning of Saturday, November 4, 2017, for another fund-raising weekend. Unlike last April, when temperatures were in the basement and ferocious winds destroyed all three of our canopies, this time the wind was tolerable, and the temperatures were in the 90s. It felt more like July than November! We began at 10:00 am and worked until 11:00 pm—a 13-hour day! Present were DeMolays Philip Eyre, Nathan Nguyen, Ian Patrick, and Ryan Triolet, plus Advisors Chip Little, Lynn Little, Mimi Little, and Alicia Freeman, and her husband Preston Freeman, who brought delicious breakfast burritos for all! Also Ryan’s mom, Jennifer Triolet, joined us, with her friend Shawn Brown, and his daughter Sidnee Brown—and District Governor Ben Wilson and his wife, Diane, also were on board. We worked the bus lot all day, with some of the boys and adults visiting the race track to watch the race during a slow period in the middle of the day.
Sunday morning was a different story, as we began before dawn, at 7:00 am. Our team had to work around a lot-full of eighteen-wheelers that had sneaked into the bus lot, over night. We also were overrun by TMS visitors who used our lot to park in, before heading across the street to take showers. Present on Sunday were DeMolays Dylan Bollig (with his grandparents, Michael and Sherry Faulkner), Philip Eyre, Nathan Nguyen, Ian Patrick, as well as Advisors Chip Little, Lynn Little, Mimi, Little, and Sara Little, plus Alicia Freeman and her husband, Preston Freeman, and several other adult volunteers: Matthew Parmerlee, and Sara’s friends Chelsea Carpenter, Everett Earhart, and Richard Tiller.
Because we had extra crew members, several small groups of us were dispatched to other locations around TMS, to direct traffic and to serve as crossing guards. A lull at mid-day allowed us to go through the tunnel under the track, to visit the infield area and watch a couple of pit crews service their race cars, “up close and personal.” Then, the afternoon was really busy, since the race featured Dale Earnhardt, Jr., in his last TMS race before retiring. We got away at 6:30 pm, having worked an 11.5-hour day. Everyone was tired but happy to have contributed substantially to our accounts for traveling to upcoming Texas State DeMolay events.
